In the quiet corners of IIT Bombay’s Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, a group of student innovators has been working on a simple yet powerful idea. Their project, a wearable sleeve designed to guide physiotherapy patients through exercises, was among the 19 ideas selected in July 2026 under Groww Foundation’s first INV.ENT cohort. Chosen from nearly four hundred submissions by thirty five students, the concept addresses a long standing challenge in rehabilitation: patients often struggle to perform prescribed movements correctly once they leave the clinic.
Physiotherapy depends heavily on consistent and accurate practice. In the clinic, therapists watch posture, correct form, and adjust intensity in real time. At home, that supervision disappears. Many patients either skip sessions or perform movements with compensations that slow recovery or create new strain. The student team set out to close this gap with a sleeve that acts as a quiet coach. Sensors embedded in the fabric track joint angles and movement patterns, offering gentle cues that help users stay on track without constant professional oversight.
The announcement came at a moment when early stage support for student ideas has become more structured. Groww Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the investment platform Groww, launched INV.ENT as a four year initiative to give young builders resources long before the market notices them. Three teams received Grand Challenge Fellow status with potential milestone based funding of up to twenty five lakh rupees annually. Sixteen others, including the physiotherapy sleeve project, secured proof of concept grants of thirty thousand rupees each. Beyond money, the cohort gained access to a fifteen thousand square foot innovation space where prototypes can be tested, users interviewed, and designs refined under mentorship.
Kalpana Swaminathan, Head of Groww Foundation, described the programme as a launchpad for conviction. “We see this as the place where young innovators get the mentorship, financial support and trust to take their first real shot, long before the world is watching,” she said. IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare echoed the sentiment, noting that the distance between an idea and its impact often depends on someone believing in it early enough. The partnership, he explained, creates an ecosystem where students can test, fail, learn and move forward without waiting for external permission.
For the team behind the sleeve, the opportunity arrives at the right stage. Early prototypes already demonstrate how soft sensors and simple feedback loops can turn a passive garment into an active recovery tool. The design aims for comfort so patients wear it through daily routines rather than only during formal exercise windows. Data collected during sessions can later help therapists review progress remotely and adjust programmes with greater precision. In a country where access to specialised physiotherapy remains uneven outside major cities, such tools hold quiet promise for expanding effective care.
The broader wave of student led health technology at IIT Bombay reflects a shift in how the next generation approaches problems. Instead of waiting for large corporate laboratories or mature startups, these young founders begin with lived observations and rapid iteration. The wearable sleeve sits alongside other INV.ENT projects that convert carbon dioxide into edible protein or protect infrastructure from drones, yet its focus remains deeply human. Recovery is personal. A patient recovering from knee surgery or a sports injury needs more than generic instructions. As the first cohort settles into the innovation space, the physiotherapy project continues its path from concept to usable device. Mentors from faculty and industry will help refine sensor accuracy, battery life and user interface. Real patients will test early versions, feeding insights that pure laboratory work cannot provide. In the coming months the sleeve will move through further trials and design improvements.
